Help Support Parents in Their Role as Their Child’s First and Best Teacher

On Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM the Leelanau Early Childhood Development Commission and The Rotary Club of Suttons Bay Leelanau County are hosting a fundraiser at Aurora Cellars, 7788 East Horn Road, Lake Leelanau, MI.  Proceeds go to Parenting Communities, an organization that provides support to parents with young children in Leelanau County.  Tickets are $25 in advance/$30 at the door and are available at www.mynorthtickets.com/events/dance-party.

Admission to the event includes appetizers and desserts, donated by restaurants throughout the County, and a glass of wine.  A wine bar also is available.  Live music provided by “Savage Soul,” a local intergenerational band, will play your favorite songs for dancing or just listening.

Parenting Communities is available to all families in the County.  It supports parents by providing playgroups, home visits and links to necessary services.  It fosters social networks and provides appropriate early childhood development information.  “Parenting Communities’ subtle yet persistent efforts have resulted in a truly unique and nurturing parenting environment in Leelanau County” said Dorothy Sirrine, parent.

Additional Information About Parenting Communities

Parenting Communities of Leelanau County is a well-established, locally controlled organization that provides services to Leelanau County families with children from prenatal through age five.  Parenting Communities supports parents in their role as their child’s first and best teacher by providing play groups and home visits, and helps link families to activities, programs and services that promote healthy development.

Business leaders, educators, healthcare and social services professionals all agree that resources for quality early childhood development programming and parenting support is a wise investment that pays dividends through improved child success in school and in life.  According to Dr. James Heckman, Nobel Prize winning economist from the University of Chicago, high-quality birth to five programs can deliver 13% return on investment.  Significant gains are realized through better outcomes in education, health, social behaviors and employment.

The Dance Party benefit on September 7th will raise funds to help assure that families with young children in Leelanau County have the resources and support they need in order for their children to thrive.  For more information about the event or the work of Parenting Communities contact Leelanau Early Childhood Development Commission (LECDC) Program Committee chair, Mary Manner, at mary@venturenorthfunding.org or 231-995-7114, or Patricia Soutas-Little, LECDC Chair and Rotary Club member at psoutaslittle@gmail.com  or 231-218-8496.
