INFORMATION ON CAMPAIGN SIGN STANDARDS FOR BINGHAM TWP

BINGHAM TOWNSHIP SIGN STANDARDS – CAMPAIGN SIGNS

  • The Bingham Township Planning Commission and Township Board amended these sign standards in 2019 to comply with United States Supreme Court decisions.
  • Campaign signs are considered “Temporary Signs” by the zoning ordinance.
  • The standards for temporary signs in Bingham Township depend on the zoning district in which a property is in.   See Bingham Township Zoning Map

https://www.leelanau.gov/downloads/binghamtwp_adopted_zoning_map_52016.pdf

  • In the Agricultural and Residential Zoning Districts the following apply:
  1. A Maximum of Two (2) total Temporary Signs (campaign signs) are allowed per parcel.
  2. A Temporary (campaign) sign shall not be larger than three (3) square feet of sign area. (for example 24” x 18” = 3 square feet)

ALSO:

  • Temporary signs must be removed no later than ten (10) days after the event.
  • Temporary Signs within any county or state right-of-way or easement must meet the requirements of the applicable road agency (ie, Michigan Department of Transportation or Leelanau County Road Commission)
  • One should have the permission of a property owner to place a temporary sign on or in front of their property.
  • Bingham Township does not have the authority to physically remove signs, however, violations of these sign standards may constitute a violation of the Zoning Ordinance, and may be prosecuted as such.
