Apply For... A Short Term Rental Permit or Renewal

ADOPTED SHORT TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE

On October 19, 2020 the Bingham Township Board adopted Ordinance No. 2020-1019-01, The Bingham Township Short Term Rental Ordinance. It went into effect on January 1, 2021. Starting on that date, anyone operating or advertising a Short Term Rental must obtain a permit from Bingham Township.

Here is the adopted Ordinance: Bingham Township Ordinance No. 2020-1019-01

A Short-Term Rental Permit is an annual permit for a calendar year, and must be renewed each year.

The Bingham Township Board has established a limit of 86 Short Term Rental Permits. Permit holders in good standing will be renewed upon submittal of a renewal application by March 1st and payment of the annual fee.

Renewal Applications for a calendar year will be accepted starting on October 1st of the previous year. Renewal Applications submitted after March 1st of the current year are subject to availability of permits.

Renewal Applications will be accepted by email:  zoningadmin@suttonsbaytwp.com

Applications normally take at least 7-14 days to process. Applicants will receive their permits by email.

Update: March 26, 2024:     The 2024 permit renewal process is underway, and the exact number of available permits will not be known until after all permit renewals have been processed, however, it is estimated that all of the 86 total permits established by the township board will be claimed. Any applications for New Permits will be placed on a waiting list.

Note:

The Bingham Township Short-Term Rental Ordinance, as-adopted, bases the allowable occupancy of a short-term rental on the number of bedrooms approved on a Health Department permit or approval.

This requirement is intended to prevent over-occupancy of short-term rentals and over-use of the short-term rental septic systems.

Not every dwelling has a Health Department permit or approval on file, particularly older dwellings. It is our understanding that the Health Department will be reviewing these septic systems on a case-by-case basis with a Sewage/Well Evaluation or Review for Remodel.

If you have any questions on the Short-Term Rental Application or Permits, you may contact the Bingham Township Zoning Administrator at (231) 271-2722 ext. 3, mornings.
