Safety Planning
Because domestic violence involves a spectrum of abusive behaviors it is important for victims/survivors to think ahead about how to protect themselves and their children. Safety Planning is the process of thinking through various situations before there is a crisis in order to avoid unsafe situations and plan for the safest outcome if violence is unavoidable.
Many people assume that the best way to stay safe is to simply leave an abusive relationship. Ideally, all victims of abuse will eventually find a safe way to do this. However, there are a number of reasons that make it difficult for a victim to leave. And often, victims are at highest risk of violence when they actually do attempt to leave. Depending upon what stage the relationship is in, considerations for safety will vary.
Victims of domestic violence related crimes are particularly encouraged to contact a Victim Advocate at our office to go over potential safety concerns.
Victims of domestic or sexual violence may also contact the Women’s Resource Center for help.
