RECYCLING & COMPOSTING INFORMATION

What can be recycled in Leelanau County?

*Holiday cards and gift bags can be recycled with your paper, boxes, and bags as longs as there is NO glitter or foil.

  • Plastics  # 1 - #7 including plastic bags and plastic films. Please bundle them together so they don't blow out of the bins. 
  • Metal cans and lids
  • Aseptic Packaging and cartons (like juice boxes)
  • Paper & cardboard including magazines & junk mail
  • Glass - All colors, bottles and jars. No dishes, window glass, light bulbs or mirrors. 
  • Styrofoam (NO PACKING PEANUTS) 

Plastics, metal, fiber and glass all go in the same bins.

Where can I drop off my recycling?

Leelanau County drop-off  recycling locations:

     1. Greilickville:  Cherry Bend Rd. at the old fire station

     2. Peshawbestown:  M-22, north of the gas station

     3. Northport:  Mill St

     4. Cedar:  Behind Buntings Cedar Market 

     5. Empire:  Fisher St., east of LaCore Rd.

     6. Glen Lake School

     7. Glen Arbor:  At the Leelanau School

     8. Leelanau County Government Center, head towards the back of the building 

     9. Suttons Bay: Leelanau County Road Commission 10550 E Eckerle Rd 

How is the recycling program funded and who can use the recycling drop off program?

Costs for recycling and household hazardous waste & electronics collections are covered under Public Act 69 of 2005 -  An annual charge of $29 per household placed on Winter Tax Bills. The Leelanau County Recycling Programs are for Households only.

When Are the Household Hazardous Waste Collections?

Collections are held 3 - 4 times per year. YOU MUST BE A LEELANAU COUNTY RESIDENT TO PARTICIPATE.

How do I participate in a Household Hazardous Waste Collection?  Is there any cost?

Please call the Leelanau County Planning Department to set up an appointment.  There are no additional costs for Leelanau County Households to participate. (Costs are covered under the $29 annual household recycling fee.)

How can I get rid of old tires on my property?

Scrap Tire Cleanup days started in 2019 for Leelanau County residents. There is a limit of 10 tires per residence, and a non-refundable cost of $2.00/tire.  Call 231-256-9812 for an appointment and to make payment.
